SEE ALSO 56198 Thirty-ninth Legislature. Senate. No. 12. Report of the Committee of Conference appointed on the disagreement of the Senate and
the House of Representatives on the bill to provide for an inquest in cases of suspected incendiarism. On February 18, 1860, the Committee recommended
a new bill, wherein only municipal officers could call for an inquest and the municipality had to pay for the investigation. An Act to provide for
inquests in cases of suspected incendiarism, 1860. The local court had to hold an inquest within ninety days of a complaint by municipal officials.
The judge was to call a six man jury, provide for subpoenas for witnesses, create a written record, and accept the jury's decision. There were
directions about paying costs. There was nothing about pursuing an arsonist. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of
Congress).
