Coke, Reading on the Statute de Finibus Levatis, 1662
The reading del mon Seignior Coke, sur Lestatute de 27, E.1, appellee Lestatute de Finibus Levatis: by Sir Edward Coke, (4)+46p., London, G. Lee, D.
Pakeman & Gabr. Bedell, 1662. (Lacks TOC & index. Sir Edward Cook, 1552-1634, jurist and politician was one of the most distinguished figures in
British legal history. This is the first edition, and the only separate issuance, of Coke's only published readings. These twenty-three lectures given by
him at Lyons Inn shortly after he was called to the bar are a rare example of a lecture's text being delivered before an Inn of Chancery. The phrase
“de finibus levatis” roughly translates as “of the fines levied”. It was the title of a statute passed in 1299 during the reign of Edward I that
provided that the levy of every fine imposed should be read in court. The copy of this work used for scanning was one reprinted in exact imaging format by
ProQuest, EEBO Editions.)
