1911, Fr./Gr. Br., Savarkar Affair, Br. Case
Savarkar Arbitration; Case presented on behalf of the Government of His Britannic Majesty, to the tribunal constituted under an agreement signed in
London on the 25th day of October, 1910, between the Government of His Britannic Majesty and the Government of the French Republic: 33p, London, pr. at
the Foreign Office by Harrison & Sons, 1910. (Lacks TOC & index. All text is in English. This arbitration focused on a complicated dispute involving
the claim of French sovereignty over a British-Indian subject of Great Britain. The latter, an accused assassin of an Indian government official, had
been captured in England and was being extradited back to India on a British mail steamer. He escaped from imprisonment while the ship docked briefly
at Marseilles, but was quickly restored to imprisonment on the ship by English crew members. The French authorities contended that, once on French
soil, he had fallen under their jurisdiction. The two countries submitted the dispute for resolution by the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague
under an agreement dated 25 October 1910. The controversy was decided in Great Britain’s favor in an award of 24 Feb. 1911, but on fairly technical
grounds that are not likely to apply to many other cases.)
