Phillimore’s Ecclesiastical Cases, 1867-75, 3v
The principal ecclesiastical judgments delivered in the Court of Arches, 1867 to 1875: by Sir Robert Phillimore,xiv+420p, London, etc., Rivington’s,
1876. (Lacks TOC & index. A table of cases is provided on p. xiv. Phillimore was Judge of the Arches Court during 1867-75. As he describes the Arches
Court in a preface, it is the court of appeal from all of the diocesan courts in the Province of Canterbury. His preface, pp. v-xiii provides many
interesting facts and details regarding the narrow types of cases handled by the court and a window into details of its functioning. Not the least
interesting of his revelations is the fact that he was expected to hold his judgeship on a more or less pro bono basis. “The office was, during my tenure of
it, one of much honour, but really of no emolument. I do not think that in [by?] 1872 I had received enough to pay the expenses incident to my
appointment in 1867.” )
