Clark's House of Lords Reports, Index, 1814-68
A digested index to all of the reports in the House of Lords from the commencement of the series by Dow, in 1814, to the end of the eleven volumes of
the House of Lords Cases (1814-66); With references to more recent decisions; Intended as a supplementary volume to the House of Lords Cases: by
Charles Clark, (2)+xliii+396p, London, Butterworths, 1868. (A table of cases starts on p. i. It is more helpful than usual in that the main subjects
covered by each case are noted. The core text is organized in alpha order by subject. Despite the claim in the title for coverage of “all of the reports in
the House of Lords” for the period 1814-66, Clark in fact restricts his coverage to those series with which he had some personal involvement, namely:
Dow’s H.L. Cas., 1812-18, 6v; Dow & Clark’s H.L. Rpts., 1827-32, 2v; Clark & Finnelly’s H.L. Rpts., 1831-46, 12v; & House of Lords Cas., 1847-66,
11v. Left uncovered were the following, for some terms competing, House of Lords reporters that were also published during 1814-66: Bligh’s H.L. Rpts.,
1819-21, 4v & N.S., 1827-37, 11v; Maclean & Robinson’s H.L. Rpts., Scot., 1839, 1v; West’s H.L. Rpts., 1839-41, 1 v.; Bell’s H.L. Cas., 1852-50, 7v;
and Equity Rpts., H.L., 1853-55, 3v. Clarks’ failure to cover those six titles may have had less to do with hyper-competitiveness than with the way in
which such reference works were assembled in the pre-computer era. Most of the prep work was done on file cards arranged in the equivalent of
shoeboxes. Those file cards could easily serve double duty for the compilation of digest such as this, with the actual work possibly being performed by
others. Clark may have omitted covering the works of his contemporaries simply because he didn’t have access to their files.)
