Description and Holding Information
1877-87, Legislative Council Journals, all publ.
Journals and proceedings of the Legislative Council of the North-West Territories: n.a., 1877-87, Regina, pr. for the government, 1877-87, all
published. (In 1870 the Dominion of Canada terminated the rights of the Hudson’s Bay Company over its territories. Large tracts of those territories were
eventually ceded to the provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, and another tract became the Yukon Territory. What was left became
the Northwest-Territory {NWT}. The Dominion government first provided for the temporary governance of the NWT under the jurisdiction of the Lt.-Gov. of
Manitoba. In 1876 all of the former Hudson’s Bay Company territories (less Manitoba) were established as the North-West Territories, with a Lt.-Gov.
and a partially elective Council, the nominated members being appointed by the Privy Council of the Dominion. The site of future Regina was chosen for
the seat of government. The Executive Council became partly elective in 1885 and was replaced by a Legislative Assembly in 1888.)
