Laws of Assiniboia passed by the governor and council of Assiniboia: no tp, n.a., 19p,. np, April 11, 1862. (This printing incorporates an original compilation of 1862 and local enactments in amendment, arranged in a subject order through 17 May 1869. These laws governed the Hudson's Bay Company's settlement of Assiniboia {uh-sin-uh-BOI-uh} in the district surrounding Fort Garry, located at the juncture of the Assiniboine {uh-SIN-uh-boin} and Red rivers, the site of present-day Winnipeg. This Assiniboia eventually became part of Manitoba, and should be distinguished from the later-established District of Assiniboia surrounding Regina that eventually became part of Saskatchewan. At the time of the promulgation of these laws Assiniboia, or the Red River Settlement as it came to be called, was administered by a local Governor and Council nominated by the Company and was populated by something over 6,000 people. The community was composed in large part of French Canadians and Metis {the offspring of French Canadians and Indian mothers}, a few descendants of the pioneers from an earlier settlement sponsored by the Earl of Selkirk, and retired officers of the Company. The original book from which this electronic copy was scanned is being preserved in perpetuity in the Balfour Halevy Special Collections of the Osgoode Hall Law Library, York University, Toronto, Canada.)
