1839-52, Pinney's Supreme Court Reports
Reports of cases argued and determined in the Supreme Court of the Territory of Wisconsin, and in the Supreme Court of the State of Wisconsin; With
tables of cases and principal matters: by S.U. Pinney, Vol. 1–3, Chicago, Calaghan, 1872–, all publ. Cite as Pin. (Pinney's goal was to publish ab
initio or republish all cases decided by Wisconsin's Supreme Court, territory and state, between the years 1836–1853. Thus, in addition to covering the
years that they missed, he reprints all of the cases reported earlier by Burnett, 1841-43, and Chandler, 1849-52; {For Burnett, see elsewhere on this
site}. Pinney’s lengthy preface {Vol. 1, pp. 9–56} provides a valuable and scholarly exposition of the evolution of Wisconsin, from being a part of the
Michigan Territory into the separate Wisconsin Territory and then into a free-standing state, and of the foundation of its judicial system. The
Supreme Court of the Territory sat from 8 Dec. 1836 to 2 Aug. 1847. Wisconsin became a state on 29 May 1848, on which date the territorial courts were
merged into the state government. )
