Virginia Attorney General Report, 1836-

Official reports of the Attorney General of the State of Virginia to the Governor and Legislature: 1836–, Richmond, State Printer, 1837. (The office
of Attorney General existed in the Colony of Virginia from the earliest times, although the first recorded incumbent was Richard Lee, appointed on 12
Oct. 1643. The first known published report was that of 1837, issued in response to an act of 1836 requiring annual reports from the A.G. office. The
practice of annual reports was continued with fair regularity from that time to date, although there are some gaps for the years proceeding and during
the Civil War and Reconstruction. Beginning with 1895 the annual reports began to include selected A.G. opinions deemed to be of general public
interest. Many of the earlier reports were not published separately; instead being included in other documents such as the Journals of the House of
Delegates or the Annual Reports of the State. The fact that for many of the states there were differing patterns of publication for the A.G reports and
opinions makes for a confusing literature. To minimize confusion in its online offerings, LLMC has chosen to group all of the U.S. state attorney generals’
