The Statutes of Oklahoma, 1893; Being a compilation of all the laws now in force in the Territory of Oklahoma; : xvi+1338p, Compiled under the direction and supervision of Robert Martin, Secretary of the Territory, by W.A. McCartney, John H. Beatty and J. Malcolm Johnston, a committee elected by the Legislative Assembly: xvi+1338+1p, Guthrie, The State Capital Printing Co., 1893, all published. (This work was the second attempt at codification of the laws of the Territory. It aimed to improve upon and replace the somewhat abortive attempt that resulted in The Statutes of Oklahoma, 1891, offered elsewhere on this site. Unfortunately, this second attempt does not appear to have been very much better funded than the first. As the preface describes: “The major portion of the laws were rushed through the legislature at the eleventh hour of its existence. The Supreme Court having found no law for the employment of subordinate officers, committees were without clerks and the enrolled bills were prepared by voluntary penmen, some of whom were inexperienced. That many errors occurred under such condition is not surprising, and, while the committee has endeavored to correct them, they have not tampered with the wording of the enrolled bills.” Despite the Committee’s reservations, the codification again received authentication from Secretary Martin, and took effect as positive law on 14 August 1893.)
