Canal Fund Commissioners. Special report on the Mission to England, 1840
|
|
Document No. 108 Special report of the Canal Fund Commissioners, in reply to a resolution of the House of Representatives, containing inquiries relative to the mission to England. February 20, 1840. The resolution wanted to know why the Commissioners decided to sell bonds in England, why it almost decided not to, and how the failure of a particular bank impacted the bonds. Apparently, the bonds were not selling in the United States, so the Commissioners considered selling sterling bonds in England. One Commissioner did go to London, but was unable to make a sale. Paragraph No. 7 needs some back story to be fully understood.
