Description and Holding Information
Gen. Supt. of Common Schools. Annual report, 1st (1853)-
<1st (1853)- Annual reports of the General Superintendent of the Common Schools of North Carolina. Included is a review of the school system,
teacher certification and other relevant information. Of note, on page 9 of LLMC #21896-1855, the superintendent is very chagrined that the then current
history book suggested that Connecticut first voted for independence in 1776; however, the report stated that North Carolina did so two months prior.
The superintendent then stated that "it is intolerable to think that all our children, in Schools supported by the State, should be learning to despise
it; ...all matters unjust and discreditable to us [should be] expurgated...". (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the
Library of Congress and the University of North Carolina Library at Chapel Hill).
