1835, Rayner. Speech at the Const. Conv. (republ. 1855)
Speech by Hon. Kenneth Raynor, delivered at the Convention of 1835, and republished in 1855. In this address he advocated for religious liberty
with respect to membership into the General Assembly, which did not allow Catholics or Jews. Of note, he stated on page 2, "the progress of Religious
liberty has not been commensurate with that of Civil liberty, and that Religious intolerance has ever been the handmaid of Despotism!" Also attached
were two 1855 letters which discussed the "Know-Nothing" party and the authors' objection to its philosophy and beliefs. (Digitized from a microfilm
copy of titles originally held by the University of North Carolina Library in Chapel Hill).
