October 16, 1721 Broadside issued by Gov Gurdon Saltonftall, governor of Connecticut. The document proclaimed November 8th as a public day of

A proclamation for a publick thanksgiving : Although, considering the judgments of God ... it is nevertheless our duty to acknowledge the many influences of divine goodness ... I have therefore thought fit ... to appoint ... Wednesday, the eighth day of November next, to be observed as a day of publick thanksgiving througout the colony ...
