Description and Holding Information
1842, Freeman's Chancery Cases, 1839-42
Reports of cases decided in the Superior Court of Chancery of the State of Mississippi; Vol. 1, containing a series of cases decided between December
term 1839, and July Term, 1843: by John D. Freeman; xi+783p, Cincinnati, E. Morgan & Co., 1844. (The Chancery Court was established in 1821. Its
early work was unreported. Only in 1842 was the Attorney General charged by law with the responsibility of reporting the decisions of this court. Since
earlier decisions were not available, this first volume of what was expected to be the start of an official series covered only Chancellor Buckner's
decisions from 1839–1842. A subsequent Act withdrew the Attorney General's authority, and the legislatively-authorized series was not continued. See
Smedes and Marshall's report volume for additional cases reported unofficially.)
