Massachusetts Claim Agent. Letter to the Governor, 1835 Dec. 31
|
|
Senate No. 10 J. C. Bates, the State's agent re the claim for payment for militia efforts in the War of 1812, re-stated the claim, especially the part ruled not admissible. He cited the objections raised by the Secretary of War, but said a more recent law required the Secretary to report to Congress if anything was due to Massachusetts. There was another argument underway, involving more than Massachusetts, about paying interest on money withheld. Bates saw little point in remaining in Washington at that time, but awaited direction. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
