McMahon. Mason, Life of John Van Lear McMahon, 1880
Life of John Van Lear McMahon; By the late Hon. John Thompson Mason; Completed, revised and edited: by his son John Thompson Mason, (5)+6-140p,
Baltimore, John B. Piet, 1880. (Lacks TOC & index. McMahon, 1800-1870, was a prominent lawyer and political insider in Jacksonian, and later Whig, politics
in Maryland. While offered many positions at both the state and national level, not least that of Attorney General of the United States under
President Tyler, he declined most such opportunities. One of his main claims to historical significance arose during a short service in the state legislature
during its session of 1823-24. Despite his youth and legislative inexperience, he was appointed chair of the state House Judiciary Committee, and
used that opportunity to guide through a measure, widely referred to as the “Jew Bill.” This “Act to extend to the sect of people professing the Jewish
religion the same rights and privileges that are enjoyed by Christians” became effective on 5 January 1826, some 36 years after the adoption of the
federal Bill of Rights, finally granting the right to vote and hold public office to the “otherwise qualified” Jews of Maryland. The bill had limited
initial impact, given that it was thought that there were only about 150 Jews in Maryland at the time.)
