Senate. Comm. on Military Affairs. Act to provide support for the families of soldiers, 1864
SEE ALSO 56435, 56443 Forty-third Legislature. Senate. No. 14. The Committee on Military Affairs submitted: An Act to provide support for the
families of soldiers, 1864. Cities, towns, and plantations could tax their residents to provide support for the families of soldiers, but not officers:
75c/week for adults and 50c/week for those under fifteen, but never more than $3.00/week. The families had to apply for aid, basically to generate a
paper trail so the local jurisdiction could ask for reimbursement from the state. Families of deserters were excluded. (Digitized from a microfilm
copy of title originally held by the Maine State Library and the Library of Congress).
