House. Comm. on Education. Report on repeal of laws establishing the Superintendent of Common Schools, 1863
Forty-second Legislature. House. No. 5. Report [of the Committee on Education ... the expediency of repealing all laws establishing a
Superintendent of Schools ....] The Committee considered the legal job description of the Superintendent and any tasks related to normal schools. However, the
normal schools were closed, so his duties were somewhat altered. The Superintendent sent a report on how he spent his time: there was lots of travel
all over the state and lots of reporting and reports to read. He did not have a clerk. The Committee decided that since the state spent a lot of
money on the schools, it was important to have someone to see that it was well spent; they thought it was inexpedient to do away with the position.
