Senate. Act to aid the Aroostook Railroad and promote the sale of public lands, 1861
SEE ALSO 56237, 56249, 56255 Fortieth Legislature. Senate. No. 21. An Act to aid the Aroostook Railroad and promote the sale of public lands,
1861. The public lands of Aroostook and Penobscot counties were to be managed by the Governor and the Land Agent to encourage settlement and to use the
sale money, along with any federal claims money, to aid the railroad. There were directions for where to build branches. If the railroad accepted the
offer and built track to a certain point, the money would start to come to it at $5,000 per mile. For certain branches, payment would be made every
ten miles. Once built, the railroad could be leased or bought by the European and North American Railway, following long directions for payment. Any
remaining money after ten years stayed with the state. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine Historical Society
Library, the Maine State Library, and the Library of Congress).
