House. Comm. on State Library. Act relating to the State Library, 1861
Fortieth Legislature. House. No. 47. The Committee on the State Library submitted a bill: An Act relating to the State Library, 1861. The
Governor and the Council were to manage the library and appoint a bonded librarian for a three year term. His salary was $800/year, with an appropriation
of $500/yr. He and the governor would cooperate on what books to buy; the librarian would report his financials and a list of new material every
January. There was a long list of who could borrow, with a limit of three volumes at a time. The Governor was to distribute three copies of Maine's laws
and other documents to all the states and Canadian provinces. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine Historical
Society Library, the Maine State Library, and the Library of Congress).
