Thirty-seventh Legislature. House. No. 24. An Act to amend chapter eighty-four of the Revised Statutes in relation to levy of execution against
towns, 1858. Unfortunately, there is no example of a reason for this. Whenever an execution was issued against a town, an officer notified the town's
assessor, who in turn, notified the town meeting and determined all residents' share. The residents then had ten days to pay; if someone did not,
