House. Papers relating to the Commissioner at Washington on claims of Maine, 1857
Thirty-sixth Legislature. House. No. 8. Papers relating to the Commissioner at Washington on claims of Maine. On February 3, 1857, Mr. Hamlin sent
copies of papers filed with the State Department about the state's claims under the Treaty of Washington in 1852. Both Maine and Massachusetts had
been paid substantial money to agree to the boundary with Canada, but Maine wanted further payment --$2/acre--for land for settlers in the disputed
region. Most of the other papers were about the Commissioners' expenses. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of
Congress).
