|
|
Forty-third Legislature. House. No. 6 On February 9, 1864, Governor Cony forwarded a letter. On February 5, 1864, Mr. Francis O. J. Smith offered his 90 acre property with a large house and outbuildings near roads and railroads outside of Portland if the state would use it as Primary Agricultural College Campus and sustain it in perpetuity. He suggested the recent federal Morrill grant funds could be used to establish smaller facilities in various parts of the state to get diversity of soils, weather, etc. He wanted the school to be non-sectarian. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine State Library and the Library of Congress).
