Delaware. Objection to sale of public lands, 1831 [Mass. doc.]
|
|
House No. 6 On June 1, 1831, Governor Lincoln passed along several Resolves from the State of Delaware. Its legislature wanted more careful sale of the national public lands to prevent rampant speculation and to use the proceeds to pay down the national debt. When that was accomplished, the proceeds should be distributed among the states to fund education. Six other states and Delaware approved of the Tariff of 1828. Louisiana wanted to amend the Constitution so that the president served one six year term only. Delaware was not in favor. Missouri wanted to do away with the electoral college, but Delaware disagreed. Alabama wanted to re-elect Andrew Jackson by acclamation, but Delaware disagreed. Delaware was much in favor of additional money or pensions for Revolutionary War veterans. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
