1923, G.B./U.S. Eastern Extension, Australasia and China Telegr. v. U.S. (Award)
American and British Claims Arbitration Tribunal: Award, Eastern Extension, Australasia and China Telegraph Company, Limited: 12p., Place of
publication and publisher not identified, n.d. (A British claim on behalf of the Eastern Extension, Australasia and China Telegraph Company Limited for the
amount required to repair submarine telegraph cables cut by the U.S. during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Tribunal found that the Company was
operating as a Spanish public service completely under the authority of the Spanish Government and was aware the cables were being used for military
purposes by Spanish military authorities. They reason there is no ground for the U.S. to be forced to pay compensation for a legitimate act of war and
conclude the principles of maritime international law in existence in 1898 are sufficient to disallow the British claim.)
