American state trials; A collection of important and interesting criminal trials which have taken place in the United States, from the beginning of our government to the present day: ed. by John D. Lawson, Vol. 1-17, St. Louis, F.H. Thomas Law Book Co., 1914-36, plus undated index covering Vols. 1-10, all published. (Vols. 14-17 are currently in copyright, but digital copies will be added to this set as copyright permits. An index cover-ing more than Vols. 1-10 is thought to exist. A copy is solicited for scanning purposes. This valuable series contains a wide selection of famous trials through American history. For example: along with many trials for murder, piracy, and other scandalous activities, Vol. 3 has the record of the trial of Susan B. Anthony for voting illegally at a congressional election. Vol. 6 covers an early trial of Gen. Benedict Arnold, before his later treason, when he faced charges on other questionable behavior and basically “beat the rap.” Finally, Vol. 8 contains the trial records for the defendants in the Lincoln assassination. Regrettably, there is no general index or general table of contents. The table of contents and index for the several volumes are found starting on the pages here indicated: V.1, xv/837; V.2, vii/923; V.3, xix/891; V.4, xv/865; V.5, xix/925; V.6, xxv/883; V.7, xxv/957; & V.8, xxix/889. The prefaces for each volume, which immediately follow the title pages, provide valuable historical context for the trials covered in that volume.)
