1836-03-31, Opinion concerning voting rights after tax assessment
House No. 63 On March 31, 1836, the Supreme Judicial Court delivered an opinion in response to a question. After a jurisdiction's annual assessment
had been made and committed for collection, could the assessor assess some other tax on a poll so he would be eligible to vote? The short answer
was, "No." An assessor could not levy a tax not voted upon by the jurisdiction, so the potential voter had to wait until next year. (Digitized from a
microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
