Senate. Comm. on the Subject of a Fresh Water Basin in the harbor of Portland. Report, 1866
Forty-fifth Legislature. Senate. No. 22. Report of the Committee to which was referred the subject of a freshwater basin in the Harbor of
Portland, February 13, 1866. The Navy wanted a freshwater basin in or near Portland, so the Committee studied the question and recommended the mouth of
the Presumpscot River. They explained how it fit the criteria and noted that it would be relatively easy to build a dry dock, as well. Resolves in
favor of a fresh water basin for ironclads at Portland. The mouth of the Presumpscot River furnished all the needed facilities, so the Congressional
delegation should pursue the matter with the Navy. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine Historical Society Library,
the Maine State Library, and the Library of Congress).
