Forty-fourth Legislature. Senate. No. 20. The ten man Joint Standing Committee on Coast and Frontier Defences cited the miles of undefended coastline and listed various depredations that had occurred. The Committee included shipping statistics to show the value of the area. Resolves calling on the United States government to place steam vessels of war as a permanent ocean police upon the cost of Maine. The United States had failed to do its duty to Maine, even after various destructive events. The Governor and the Congress should urge the War Department to help.
