House. Comm. on Military Affairs. Act to provide support for the families of soldiers, 1865
SEE ALSO 56359, 56371, 56430, 56435, 56443 Forty-fourth Legislature. House. No. 43. The Committee on military Affairs submitted: An Act to
provide support for the families of soldiers, 1865. The Legislature had wrestled with the issue for years. Jurisdictions could raise money to support
the dependent mother, wife, and children under 13 of a serving soldier with 75c/week for adults and 50c/week for children, never to exceed $2.25/wk.
The families of disabled soldiers were supported for six months. The official amount would be reimbursed by the state once a year after filing the
usual paperwork. No deserter's family was allowed aid and there were directions for keeping track of deserters so the families could be cut off. No
commissioned officer's family was entitled to aid. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine Historical Society
Library, the Maine State Library, and the Library of Congress).
