seven of chapter one hundred thirty-five of the Revised Statutes in reference to proceedings in capital cases, 1864. When a person was sentenced to
death in Supreme Judicial Court, the clerk notified the governor and sent along the file. The Governor could stay the execution and when the prisoner
had served a year in solitary confinement, allow him to join the rest of the prisoners to serve his life sentence. (Digitized from a microfilm copy
