Senate. Act to provde means for the defence of the northeastern frontier, 1864
SEE ALSO 56404 Forty-third Legislature. Senate. No. 21. An Act to provide means for the defence of the northeastern frontier [new draft, as
amended by the House] 1864. Maine notified the federal government how it should help build the military railroad from Bangor to Saint John. Maine would
use the proceeds from the highest bid sale of the timber from ten townships. When the European & North American Railroad completed and used the section
from Bangor to Lincoln, the company could ask for money, and for each ten miles toward New Brunswick that were completed, it could ask again. In
Piscataquis County, the money would be used for a branch line to the slate mines and iron works. If Massachusetts took certain actions, that money would
be added to the pot. Once the land was logged off, Maine would determine which properties were suitable for settlement, divide the land into 160 acre
lots at $1.00 per acre, with the usual settlement responsibilities. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine State
Library and the Library of Congress).
