|
|
Forty-third Legislature. House. No. 20. An Act providing for the registration of births, marriages, and deaths, 1864. In May, every city, town, or plantation clerk had to send a chronological list of these events in his jurisdiction to the Secretary of State. The Secretary created forms for clergymen, doctors, and undertakers to fill out, listing the required data, to give to said clerks. Assessors could look at the data during tax season. There were fines for failure to perform. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine State Library and the Library of Congress).
