Senate. Act to dispose of public lands and abolish the Land Office, 1861
Fortieth Legislature. Senate. No. 11. An Act to dispose of the public lands and abolish the Land Office, 1861. Title to all the remaining public
lands would be given to the counties in which they were situated. Counties receiving the land would no longer be eligible for state aid for schools,
roads, or bridges. The Land Office would close on January 1, 1862 and its records sent to the Treasurer. This would be a staggering amount of
paperwork. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine Historical Society Library, the Maine State Library, and the Library of
Congress).
