House. Comm. on Elections. Report on Rose v. Jordan contested election, 1861
Fortieth Legislature. House. No. 33. Majority report of the Committee on Elections to which was referred the credentials of Harrison Rose of
Greene, together with the remonstrance of Timothy Jordan of Greene, aforesaid, against the right of said Rose to a seat in this House. Jordan alleged the
town meeting was not legal and that three votes for Rose had been thrown out, so he, Jordan, was the winner. The Committee listened to the arguments
about the three disallowed votes, and other voters were also challenged. Eventually, the Committee decided the vote was actually tied, so the whole
House would have to decide. The Minority report went through most of the same arguments again, but the minority decided for Rose by the slimmest of
margins. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine Historical Society Library, the Maine State Library, and the Library of
Congress).
