Joint Select Comm. on Railroad Communication into Piscataquis County. Report, 1861
SEE ALSO 56251 Fortieth Legislature. House. No. 19. Report of the Special Committee to whom was referred the Governor's address, relating to
railroad communication into Piscataquis County. The county was landlocked, so it especially needed a railroad. It had water power, geological resources,
and good agricultural land, but it all sat idle for lack of transportation. The Committee offered: An Act to incorporate the Bangor and Piscataquis
Railroad Company, 1861. Twenty-three men were incorporated as above, with the usual rights and responsibilities, directed to lay out a specific
route all the way to Moosehead Lake. The corporation could have 20,000 shares, was granted toll, and had to maintain fencing in certain areas. It had to
keep good records and be liable for a list of taxes. It had until 1863 to organize and file its route, then build to the Piscataquis River by 1866.
