Bryant. Report of the architect appointed by the Joint Standing Comm. on the State Prison, 1858
|

Thirty-seventh Legislature. Senate. No. 42 On February 24, 1858, the Joint Standing Committee on the State Prison notified architect G.J.F. Bryant
that he was to visit the State Prison in Thomaston, examine the existing buildings, and make recommendations for improvement. Mr. Bryant reported on
March 16, 1858, that the present layout of the buildings was unsatisfactory because there was not a good view of the whole complex for the guards.
The cells were of an old design and the farm buildings outside the wall were in ruinous condition. He recommended an additional sixty cells on one wing
and proposed to remove several service buildings in favor of a new octagonal building for prison services, but mostly to provide the correct
surveillance station for the guards. He described the materials and sent drawings, which, sadly, are not present. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title
