1835, Ursuline Community, Mt. Benedict. Petition
|

House No. 5 In early 1835, Bishop Fenwick and the owners of the Ursuline Community, Mount Benedict, in Charlestown, explained that a mob had
attacked the convent and school during the night of August 11, 1834, drove the nuns and students into the fields, ransacked the facility, and then burned it
down. No firemen or police intervened. The community had been in the area for many years, paid its taxes and been quiet neighbors. Since the
destruction was not prevented by the appropriate government entities, the loss should be indemnified by the Commonwealth. (Digitized from a microfilm copy
