Duties and dangers of those who are born free : a sermon preached at the election on January 2, 1833 before his Excellency, Levi Lincoln, His Honor
Thomas L. Winthrop, Lieutenant Governor, the Honorable Council and Legislature of Massachusetts by William B. O. Peabody, minister in Springfield.
Boston : Dutton & Wentworth, 1833. Text was Acts, chapter 22, verse 28. The sermon was 31 pages long. A few highlights: St. Paul was born free and was
not shy about saying so. For those born free, that was the way things were, but how to reconcile freedom with order was a constant question. A free
state was a government of laws and equal civil rights. The conduct and character of each man affected all people. Every stone bears part of the
burden. The Hebrews had some democratic ideas, but Christianity moved very slowly toward democracy. A free state consists of men who can govern
themselves. It is a duty of the free born to learn the worth of freedom, to remember a responsibility to God. Each person must help govern. There is a duty
to remember one's own power and pay attention to those who are trying to grasp too much. The dangers of freedom are mostly born of neglect of the
above duties. No man has any power over you but what you give him. Don't fall into bondage to a political party. If one state is false to the union,
that union is gone. It appear the seams are opening, the groans of the foundation giving way are around us. [This is 27 years before 1860!] Then he
