1831, Petition of the Trustees of Amherst College
|
|
SEE ALSO 51812 Senate No. 17 Petition from Amherst College for monetary support. The College, after a long and contentious debate, had been
incorporated. The new Trustees found a thriving institution, except it was mired in debt. The school also needed more housing for an increasing student
body, so the debt increased. The Trustees politely pointed to the appropriations given to other institutions of higher learning and asked for some for
Amherst. The petition was sent to committee on January 12, 1831.The Committee's subsequent report echoed much of the petition and said the school was
deserving of support, but there was no money. The Committee recommended pushing the petition on to the next General Court. (Digitized from a

To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled : the trustees of Amherst College, having assiduously labored to carry into effect, as fast as they were able, the wise and liberal purposes of the legislature in the establishment of that institution, are constrained by existing circumstances to lay before your honorable bodies a brief sketch of its present situation and prospects, with the confident hope, that the government will make such provision for its relief, as after due consideration, a wise regard to the public interests may seem to require.
