**Abstract of the returns of the overseers of the poor in Massachusetts for 1838 / prepared by the Secretary of the Commonwealth. The report was
submitted on February 22, 1839 for 299 jurisdictions and Boston. The many columns were arranged first by county and then town with ten pages of data
about numbers and kinds of paupers, the almshouses and their property, and how much money was spent on the effort. **In 1839, the report had the same
title and tables, with ten pages of data. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State
Library). *************************** **Abstract of the returns of the overseers of the poor in Massachusetts for [the year ending November 1] 1841 prepared by the
Secretary of the Commonwealth. All but one town reported, so this report was the most complete to date. There were nine pages of tables organized first
