**Abstract of the returns of insurance companies, incorporated with specific capital; exhibiting the condition of those institutions on December 1, 1838 / prepared by the Secretary of State. Boston : Dutton & Wentworth, 1839. The report was submitted on January 19, 1839. Only one company failed to file. There were two pages of columns for each company focusing on each company's holdings, their capital, notes held, fire and marine insurance policies written, various ways of looking at premiums, amount of losses, and the number of capital shares held by the company, followed by six pages of remarks. A separate supplement focused on the capital shares of each company.
**In 1839, the Abstract had the same title and tables, with eight pages of remarks. All companies responded. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).

**Abstract of the returns of insurance companies incorporated with specific capital: exhibiting the condition of those institutions on the first day of December, 1841 prepared by the Secretary of the Commonwealth. Boston : Dutton & Wentworth, 1841. The Secretary observed that there needed to be a law requiring notification of closing by an insurance company. There were four pages of tables showing the investment vehicles chosen by the companies, loans, and losses. They were followed by seven pages of Remarks in fine print.
