1766-01-??, That the stamped paper remain in Fort George
A January 1766 broadside proclaimed that the stamps would remain at Fort George. Of note, the British Parliament had passed the Stamp Act, which
required the use of specially stamped paper for legal documents, playing cards, calendars, newspapers and dice for virtually all business in the
colonies, and was going into effect on November 1. Following the passage of this strongly opposed act, representatives from nine of the original thirteen
colonies met in October to protest to the King. Economic issues resulting from protests caused Parliament to repeal the act, although it also declared
the right to pass any law over the colonies. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the New York Historical Society Library).
