1696-08-02, Prepare for war with the French
Two copies of an August 2, 1696 Broadside issued by Gov. Benjamin Fletcher of New York and Connecticut. This proclamation advised all military and
citizens to prepare for war with the French, by getting their arms prepared, and providing any intelligence to the governor or his council. The first
document is a copy of the second. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the New York Historical Society Library c. 1); New

Title:   By His Excellency Coll. Benjamin Fletcher, captain general and governour in chief of His Majesties province of New-York, &c. A proclamation : Whereas I have this day received information from the Right Honourable the Lords of His Majesty's Privy Council, bearing date the 20th day of April last past, that the French are making preparations by shipping, and otherwise, for an attempt on some of His Majesties plantations in America ...
