|
|
The Duke of York's Laws, dated 1665, in manuscript. A printed prologue indicated that the code was drawn up by Governor Richard Nicolls of New York in order to create a more unified legal system in the newly created Yorkshire (now Long Island, Staten Island and Westchester County), although it eventually covered the entire province of New York. Most of the code relied on existing Massachusetts and New Haven laws. There were also several documents included, although the last one was incomplete.
