states: “The desirability of making a permanent record of the features of the more prominent American Indians of the various tribes had its inception about
the year 1824, when the administration of Indian affairs was under the control of the U.S. War Department, the official immediately in charge being
the Superintendent of Indian Trade. The incumbent of the position at that time was Col. Thomas L. McKenney.” (The cover page indicates this is a reprint
