1925, G.B./U.S., Several Canadian Hay Importers (G.B. v. U.S.) (U.S. Oral Argument)
American and British Claims Arbitration: Canadian Claims for Refund of Duties, Oral Argument by Fred K. Nielsen, Agent and Counsel for the United
States: 1 preliminary leaf+64p., Washington, Government Printing Office, 1925. (The U.S. oral argument before the arbitral tribunal emphasizes the
principle of international law that a nation has a sovereign right with respect to customs matters. The argument is also made that in this case the U.S. was
merely enforcing statutory provisions similar to those enforced by many countries and did not violate any treaties or principles of international
law. The point is also made that if these “test cases” are decided in favor of Great Britain, it would open up the process to others and amount to a
“blank check” with the Canadians able to “fill in amounts and claim refunds as they please.”)
