Mauritius constitutional conference, 1965: n.a., 31p, Cmnd. 2797, London, HMSO, 1965. (In 1961 Britain agreed in principle to eventual Mauritian independence. Following a constitutional conference in London, the leader of the majority elective party on Mauritius became Chief Minister. Further constitutional negotiations culminated in the constitutional conference described in the present document. A general election in 1967 was won by a pro-independence coalition of Hindu and Muslim parties, which was opposed by the party representing the French and Creoles. Race riots accompanied the final transition to independence, which was proclaimed on 12 March 1968. Initially Mauritius was a constitutional monarchy, with the Queen of England serving as head of state. On 12 March 1992, Mauritius became a republic within the Commonwealth.)
