The Grenada constitutional conference, 1973: n.a., 20p, Cmnd. 5379, Miscellaneous No. 20 91973), London, HMSO, 1973. (After the dissolution of the Federation of the West Indies in 1962, Grenada assumed association status with the United Kingdom, becoming fully self-governing with regard to internal affairs while the UK remained responsible for defense and external affairs. Following the constitutional conference of 1983, Grenada became independent within the Commonwealth on 7 February 1974. The independence constitution provided for a Governor-general appointed by the Crown; a bicameral legislature, with an appointed Senate and a fully elective House of Representatives; and a Cabinet consisting of a Prime Minister, the leader of the majority in the House, and such other ministers as the Governor-General appointed on the advice of the Prime Minister. Grenada’s constitution was suspended after a military coup in March of 1979, with the Parliament being replaced by a Marxist-oriented government. Constitutional government, upon the model of the 1975 constitution, was restored after an invasion by the United States, with token support from six other countries, in October of 1983.)
